Well we did it. My wife wanted to upgrade to a 3 row crossover and since she loved her 16' Forester she wanted to stay with the Subaru name plate. So she followed along with announcements on the Ascent. As soon as she could we pre-ordered one that we could back out on if we didn’t like it. We also test drove a Highlander and a Santa Fe which we also liked. The Highlander is very nice.
So now with the two kids under 3 and a fairly large dog we now have much space. We picked it up Saturday and have just over 100 miles so far but we have a big trip planned for this weekend.
So today I svended it and gave it a go with a foam cannon with chemical guys pink stuff then I tried their waterless wash and wax. I’m pretty satisfied with the end result but will be giving it another carnuba wax next week.
First impressions are that it is much quieter then the Forester. The 2.4 turbo does not lack for power at any speed. The CVT is adequate and doesn’t feel gimmicky. The biggest complaint so far is the electric steering is way too light. It does not give you any feedback. The Highlander was similar and since we don’t have a local Mazda dealer I haven’t tried the CX-7. I’ll do a full review later if anyone is interested.

Great choice! especially for anyone who wants to continue with Subaru. The reviews have generally been very positive. Looks like they studied the competition well and made sure all the key features were included.
I wish they’d put the 2.4Turbo in the Outback and Legacy. 260hp and 277 lb. ft of torque would go well with those two instead of the 3.6R
Very nice color, by the way.

I really think it will be the engine for the next STI only tuned to about 350 hp. It has a smooth power band. The color is the best. The second best one is the brown. It's great.
![]() 08/13/2018 at 19:25 |

It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see them phase out the 3.6 in favor of this new 2.4 in the next generation Legacies and Outbacks.

How's storage space behind the 3rd row?
![]() 08/13/2018 at 19:41 |
|
It’s not huge. But the majority of the time the 3rd row will be laid down for the doggo. And if needed it will take a few suitcases and back packs.

GAHHHHHH DEALER STICKERS AND TAG FRAMES, HOW COULD YOU LET THIS HAPPEN?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?

Currently on a road trip in South Dakot a and I spotted a red Ascent today! Did a double take because it’s such a stylish 3 row crossover!

I’ve only had it three days. They will be coming off

It’s not going to be a buy-back because of the missing welds like a few hundred
others, is it?
![]() 08/13/2018 at 20:01 |

The whole thing got cancelled according to my dealer. I asked them about it specifically.

CHIP IT!
This could be our next vehicle (mostly mine) and that could be a big factor. We’re also just getting our own local Subie dealer 5 minutes away so we won’t have to mess with the scumbag downtown — he’s the only dealer currently serving about 2 million people.

Is there a tuner even available for it yet?
![]() 08/13/2018 at 20:07 |

Dude, you make the dealer take that shit off before you take the car home.
![]() 08/13/2018 at 20:07 |

I just figured Cobb (et al) were like APR for VW — they usually have a new chip out within months of a new engine.
/speculation

I guess I don't care that much. The dealer is great and I'm not going to extend buying the car with two hungry tired children.

Since you peaked my curiosity I did a quick search and found zilch so far. Give it time.

I’m curious to see how the new 2.4 lasts over time. I’m currently not a Subaru fan given what I’ve been through.

I’m very impressed and have had very few issues with the Subarus I’ve owned. My 2006 WRX is at 138,000 miles (7 8,000 by me) and on it’s second clutch, and on it’s original turbo and headgaskets. And it only uses a bit of oil. Nothing outrageous. The 2016 Forester was rock solid and only needed a wheel bearing. And I put 60,000 miles on that in 3 years.

Nice! If I can afford it this may be my next vehicle as kiddo #2 is on the way kiddo #1 is still in a rear facing seat and we take multiple long road trips a year with doggo and meow meow cat to ski country and often logging roads, hiking trail heads, possible light towing... the generic Subaru stereotype. The Outback is great so far but becoming increasingly small even with a Yakima box up top. Highlander is also on the list but seems more expensive for what you get and seems small inside, like, how do they even fit a 3rd row...I also don’t want a much larger vehicle like Tahoe or even Explorer.
I’d read a more in depth Oppo review.

Anything extra tacked on by the dealer makes my OCD twitch fiercely. The CX-5 that I just leased for my wife came with door edge guards on it that I wanted to get rid of but she kinda likes. We took it on a road trip this weekend and every time I saw them in the side view mirrors I was like AAAAHHHHH DOOOORRRRR EDGE GUARDS SHOULDN’T BE HEREEEEEE!!!!!
![]() 08/13/2018 at 21:43 |

It’s basically the same interior size as the Highlander. But it’s better equipped with a lower price. We got the premium since we wanted the 7 seater and not the 8. Captains chairs for the second row seemed better for doggo. Safety features are all on the base though. Oh and the base colors are white, silver and black. We wanted blue

Remove them one night and see if she notices. Pick a night when she is preoccupied and will get less sleep or something.

I want them to put it in the Crosstrek
![]() 08/14/2018 at 00:05 |
|
HA! If only. Every time I suggest something like this about the Crosstrek on the internet feels likr a Million people come out and defend it and say It doesnt need more power, I t’s fine, It’s not bad, It is not THAT slow I drive my 92 Hyundai that takes 0 to 60 in 15 seconds on thr freeway just fine, It deviates from its “Mission” whatever that means.
Putting even the FA2.0DiT willl be the next closest thing to the discontinued Wrx/STI hatchback. I am sure people will buy it given the brand’s following. But Subaru won’t do it because my hunch is that it will completely cannibalize wrx sti sedan sales (Ot was a 50 -50 split before 2015) and it’s their loss.

They issued a stop sale meaning all inventory has to pass inspections before being released to the customer. Only Acsents that left the factory and were delivered to customers before the discovery of the missing welds would be affected. Nice color by the way.
![]() 08/14/2018 at 03:04 |

I also wish they’d put a 2 speed transfer case in it, but that will even more definitely never happen. If they did either of those options, preferably the 2 speed t-case, it would be nearly perfect for me

It’s her car and I shall respect her wishes.
I’ll leave the stupid car stuff to mine, like last night after she went to bed I went out to the garage and cleaned all the awful brake dust off my wheels (thanks, StopTech Sport pads!) and shined up the tires. I had run it thru a gas station wash a few days ago but the design of my wheels and the dust from those pads means I have to remove the grime by hand.

kind of related to the story... i hated chemical guys pink! Every time i used it it would strip of any wax that was already on there off.

Congrats! Looks awesome. I would definitely read an Oppo review on this. I need to know if a 6ft human could sleep lying down in the back. I know I can in my 2012 Outback but would always appreciate more room.

Congrats! I had looked at a few of those they had at the dealer when I was buying my Outback. They are a good price for what you get.

CX-7 = gar bage. you dodged a bullet. The highlander criticism is super true. I HATE the steering on them.

replace your turbo on that WRX soon. trust me.

they need that engine in the forester.

i assume he meant cx-9 since cx-7s havent been around for a few years.
![]() 08/14/2018 at 12:16 |

which is a good thing. I hear the CX9 is nice. CX-7 = ford edge with mazda skin. boo. Super unimpressed when we drove one.

and the MS3 engine. It was a h odge podge and it just didnt gel in any way.

Legacy, Outback, Forester, Crosstrek...
![]() 08/14/2018 at 12:34 |

a turbo crosstrek is so desperately needed.

I have a 2013 2.5 manual outback. The engine just takes the life out of the car. A 2.4L turbo would be an amazing upgrade.
![]() 08/14/2018 at 15:07 |

If they keep the manual option I could absolutely see a turbo Crosstrek being a worthy successor to my Outback

SuperGramps swap......
![]() 08/14/2018 at 19:00 |

Yeah. I meant CX-9. We did have a CX-7 until it started to sound like a diesel. So we traded it on a Forester.
![]() 08/14/2018 at 19:01 |

That would be my daily replacement for the WRX in a heartbeat.

They are very reasonable for the equipment you get.

Maybe with a mattress pad. I don't believe the second row folds completely flush with the back. The 3rd row does

Im driving my 5th Legacy. ‘98, ‘04, 05gt ( couldn’t help myself after test driving), '11, '18. I'd live to see an STI sleeper Legacy with that 2.4 turbo. Especially since they're supposedly ditching the flat six

With the turbo

FYI, might want to make sure your Ascent isn’t part of this! 0_o
